Originally from Colchester, Thomas Mottershead holds a BMus (Hons) from Cardiff University and the University of New Hampshire (USA), a Distinction in his MMus in Choral Conducting from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a PGCE in Secondary Music from the University of Cambridge. During his studies, Thomas received the Fujisawa Male Voice Choir Award for Choral Conducting whilst at RWCMD for two consecutive years, and the Sir Geraint Evans Award for highest mark in a voice recital from Cardiff University).
Conducting
Known for his energetic, engaging and humorous rehearsals, Thomas is currently Musical Director of The Malmesbury Singers in Malmesbury, The Athenaeum Singers in Warminster and Cheltenham Choral Society in Cheltenham; Director of Music and Organist at St. Mary's Priory Church in Monmouth and Artistic Director of the Prometheus Consort. He has also acted as an Animateur and Chorus Master of the Youth Opera for Welsh National Opera. Furthermore, he is the Co-Founder of Cardiff Opera and, in Summer 2021, conducted several sold-out performances of Mozart’s ‘Le nozze di Figaro’. in Wales and the South West of England. Thomas has conducted in venues such as St. Peter's Basilica (Vatican City), St. Paul's Cathedral (London) and in other countries such as Spain, America and China.
Thomas has been conducting from an early age and has conducted several choirs and orchestras. He has worked and studied with many conductors including Simon Halsey CBE, Neil Ferris, Adrian Partington and Paul Spicer. He has been fortunate himself to have been conducted by some of the most well-renowned conductors, such as Sakari Oramo, Martyn Brabbins, Tadaaki Otaka, Mark Wigglesworth and the late Sir Andrew Davis.
Singing
On Thursday 19th June 2025, Thomas was officially announced as the newest member of APOLLO5, a critically acclaimed vocal ensemble based in London who tour all over the world. The group tour all over the UK, throughout Europe and further afield including the USA and Asia.
Thomas is frequently invited to join for concerts as a tenor soloist for concerts. He also appeared on the 2022 series of The Voice UK on ITV, singing as part of a "Classical-Musical Theatre crossover duo". Receiving four chair turns and a block from Sir Tom Jones, the duo eventually decided to have Sir Tom as their coach, departing the competition following 'The Callbacks'.
Thomas regularly performs as part of the Llandaff and Gloucester Cathedral Choirs, including for live and recorded broadcasts for the BBC, including the BBC Proms. On the stage, he has performed the roles of Khashoggi in We Will Rock You! and Anthony in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, winning the Glamorgan Drama League award for “Best Performance in a Musical 2020”.
Thomas also works with a number of charitable organisations, including Music in Hospitals and Care, Lost Chord and Tenovus.
